So here's the news...

We're going strong (expanding to a bigger studio in fact!) so if you've never drawn before and fancy giving it a go, if you're new to Brighton and want to meet some friendly creative types, if you're a seasoned draftsman looking for something different then we've got just the thing...

New tutored, untutored and experimental life drawing sessions, exhibition trips, lectures, animators life drawing and painting classes. Daytimes, evenings and weekends. All abilities and all ages welcome.

The Life Drawing sessions are going to be changing soon. We will still run our regular weekly session, but after the beginning of December these will be held in our new life drawing studio at New England House and will be complimented by new events such as the White Night Drawing Cards from the Deck.

Who ?
This totaly free event is open to everyone; welcoming anyone keen to have a go at an alternative life drawing session from total beginners to experienced draftsmen. Anybody can drop in on the sessions for any length of time, feel free to stay for as many poses as you like or just pop in to get a feel for life drawing.

What?
An extravaganza of quick fire, theatrically costumed life drawing to a quirky sound track this themed life drawing night is a chance for the uninitiated to have a taste of life drawing and for the more experienced draftsmen to try something a little different; deep into the night models will be enacting dynamic nude and costumed poses inspired by the imagery of 13 cards from Tarot deck.

Hello, hello.

Evidently its been a while since Ive updated here, the sessions are going well after five months and I'm hoping to take on additional space from which to run extra sessions. I also have a new website, you can sign up to a life drawing newsletter from the Art School page which will keep you better updated than this blog tends to... www.jakespicerart.co.uk

Here is a bit of updated information to replace the now outdated information from earlier in the year.

The Brighton Life Drawing Sessions

Who?

The Brighton Life Drawing Sessions welcome anyone who is keen to learn, to develop and to engage with drawing practice from the complete novice to professional artist. The class is taught and run by Jake Spicer, Brighton based painter and printmaker (previously of the Calico Gallery, Brighton).

What?

The sessions are largely untutored, encouraging diverse work and creative discussion amongst everybody attending; all of the classes are taught at Jake Spicer’s Brighton studio. T

he Sessions use a variety of nude models, each class is comprised of a number of long and short poses. Occasional long pose classes are held for painters and sculptors outside of the usual schedule of sessions, get in touch on the details bellow for more information. For complete beginners a full tutoring program is available within the context of the usual sessions at rate of £9 per session; regular sessions are £8 per person per session.

When?

Sessions are held from 7.30-10pm Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and 6.30-9pm Sunday. We encourage flexible booking; you are welcome to attend occasional one off sessions or regular weekly classes, all you need to do is to contact Jake Spicer on the details bellow to book your place.

Our vision

Starting in January of 2009 and, The Brighton Life Drawing Sessions are a new endeavour from Brighton based painter and printmaker Jake Spicer (previously of the Calico Gallery, Brighton). Run at cost price the Sessions are a not-for-profit project intended to provide a friendly and inspiring environment for Brighton’s creative community to come together, share ideas and most importantly, draw. The Sessions will attempt to employ models engaged with all elements of the creative arts, helping to support all elements of our arts sectors in financially interesting times.

Who?

We welcome and encourage anyone who is keen to learn, to develop and to engage with drawing practice. Although confident draphtsmen (draphtswomen) and professional artists may prefer the untutored session, and the less experienced may prefer the tutored classes both classes welcome everybody.

What?

There will be two types of session, tutored (taught by Jake Spicer) and untutored. Both will have a nude model and will comprise of a selection of short and long poses, which will vary from session to session. A full program of classes, models booked and related events will be posted here and on the Sessions’ blog (coming soon) so keep your eyes peeled for regular updates. Over booked or very popular session may be repeated for those who missed out on request- please give your feed back!

Where?

Jake Spicer’s new studio, Unit 2 (North) Level 5 of New England House, the big building of work units and artists’ studios on New England street, just down from the rear entrance of Brighton Station.

When?

Starting on Monday 12th Jan 2009, held at least twice a week, every week the sessions will be flexibly run, not tying those attending to specific term times. You must book a session, by speaking to Jake, at least one week in advance to avoid disappointment; the classes will fill quickly.
